Accounting for Inflation
Inflation is another major factor that you want to be sure to account for in your retirement planning. I’ve said several times already that it tends to average 2–3% a year—meaning most things tend to get about 2–3% more expensive each year—and part of repeating that stat so many times is to imprint on your mind the importance of accounting for it in every one of your calculations, something that requires us to see the financial world quite differently from the story that’s out there. For example, if you look at the most commonly cited stock market index, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the chart of absolute (nominal) growth over the last century looks incredibly dramatic:
